Q. What is the V-Chip and do I need a new television to get this feature?

A. The V-Chip is an internal chip, that when integrated in a television or satellite receiver, the chip screens out programs based on certain criterion. For instance, a certain content such as language, sexual content, nudity and violence can be detected and blocked if a program contains that content. The program is then automatically locked out. The V-chip is the technology that has been in the news lately. The lawmakers in Washington are passing legislation to require the V-chip in all televisions built in the future. Actually, the future is now. The Dish Network satellite receivers already have the V-chip technology. Start protecting your family today.

Q. Can I install the system myself?

A. Yes, if you consider yourself somewhat handy and have about 2 to 4 hours available you can install the satellite system yourself. A self installation kit is available with a video on how to install the system, a 100' length of RG-6 cable, and the other necessary parts to secure the dish to your home. The self installation kits are available free upon request with every system purchased from New Star Communications.

Q. Where do I mount the dish?

A.The 20" mini Dish 500 can be mounted anywhere on your home as long as there is a clear line of sight to the southern sky. The most common limitation is very large trees that block the southern sky. If you live on the east coast it will need to point to the southwest, if you live on the west coast it will need to point to the southeast. The location needs to be clear and unobstructed from obstacles such as trees, buildings or terrain. Choose a secure place to mount the dish. The easiest place is the wood trim of the eaves or wood trim around a window. Some other locations include the fireplace, the roof, a pole or a post out in the yard.

Q. How big is the dish? Are there any restrictions in my neighborhood?

A. The dish is only 20" in diameter. That is about the size of a pizza pan or a hub cap on a car. The dish itself is very light and weighs less than 10 pounds. There are no restrictions to this size dish where you live. Legislation has been passed in the Telecommunications Act of 1996 section 207 that states "No restrictive covenant, encumbrance, homeowners association rule , or other non-governmental restrictions shall be enforceable to the extent that it impairs a viewers ability to receive video programming services over a dish less than one meter in diameter".

Q. What is the cost of the Dish 500 digital satellite system?

A. The Dish 500 digital satellite system sells for as little as $149.00. Each home has different requirements and needs so give us a call at 1-800-528-1999 and we can discuss your needs. We offer many exciting promotions where the Dish 500 digital satellite system is FREE. Click here for details.

Q. How much is the programming per month?

A. Programming is purchased in a monthly subscription package similar to cable services. Most people are substituting the new satellite television service for their cable service. Using that budgeted amount to get the new digital satellite television service. The programming packages start at $24.99 a month for 60 channels on 1 TV. Click here to view the different packages that are available.

Q. How many televisions can I watch with digital satellite television?

A. Many people have the misconception that digital satellite television can only be watched on one television. This is not correct. Digital satellite television can be watched on multiple televisions up to eight rooms. If you have more than one television you will need additional receiver boxes to be able to watch different programs at the same time in separate rooms.

Q. Can I receive the broadcasts in Canada and Mexico?

A. Currently because of government laws the Dish 500 broadcasts cannot be currently received in Canada or Mexico.

Q. Why do I need a 20” Dish 500 dish to access BYU-TV?

A. The 20” Dish 500 in necessary to receive BYU-TV. With the 20” dish and two LNBs (door knob looking part on the end of the arm in front on the dish) the digital satellite receiver can see two satellite positions in the sky. The two orbiting satellites are at the 119 degree position and the 110 degree position in the sky. With the recent addition of the 110 degree satellite it has allowed for double the bandwidth (channels). As a result many more channels can and will be added to the new 110 degree position in the sky. This is where BYU-TV is located. The main channels like Disney, ESPN, CNN, etc. are all located at the 119 degree position. This is why it is necessary to have a 20” Dish 500 that it can point at both positions in the sky at the same time. Keep in mind that the Dish 500 is just the dish itself. You can use any model receiver with the Dish 500 such as the 301, 322, 510, 522, 721, 811, etc.

Q. What if I have an older 18” dish and the Dish Network service? How do I upgrade to the 20”Dish 500.

A. If you have an older 18” dish (only one LNB door knob looking part on the arm of the dish) you will need to upgrade your dish to the new 20”Dish 500 to receive the broadcasts from the 110 degree position. The mast that is bolted to your home will remain the same as well as the wiring. Your receivers and remotes will also remain the same. The 18” dish will need to be removed and the 20” dish will take its place. The dish will also need to be re-aimed. Once the upgrade is in place BYU-TV will become part of your programming lineup and you will have no additional charge per month as long as you subscribe to the top 60 package or above.

Q. Is there an electronic program guide?

A. Yes, unlike cable scrolling screen guides, the Dish Network satellite system has an electronic program guide. This is a feature that people really enjoy. With an electronic program guide you can use the remote to scan the guide that is similar to the format of the paper TV Guide. The guide is electronically displayed on your television screen. You can now find out what is on your favorite channels later on in the day. For movies you can select the info button and pull up a description of the movie including actors and actresses, the year the film was made, and even ratings and critiques. This is helpful in becoming more selective in the programs that are watched. Now, you will no longer have to sit and stare at a scrolling bar across the television or search for that missing newspaper or guide to find out what is on.

Q. Do I need a phone line connected to my Dish 500 digital satellite receiver?

A. No, in most cases you do not need a phone line connected to your Dish 500 digital satellite receiver. Q. What is the best way to wire a new home or addition for Digital Satellite?

A. Bring two RG6 coaxial cables to each room. This way you have an in for the digital satellite television 101010s and an out for picture or a second in for digital data 101010s or whatever the future brings (digital data etc.)Understand: You cannot split digital data 101010s. A digital stream of 101010s cannot be split like the old outdated analog cable. It is also very important that the homeowner or electrician (whoever does the work) pull at least four RG6 coaxial cables from the inside homerun=(area inside the home where all the cables congregate) to the outside. The four or more cables are best stubbed outside the home near the future location of the dish. Pull the same number cables to the outside that equals the number of rooms that you will want to have digital satellite television in. Although it never hurts to have a few extra cables accessible from the outside for the future. The location of the dish must have a clear line of sight to the southern sky.
